Several years ago, a publication was rediscovered in one of the Regimental Museums in Scotland. It was entitled:- "An Account of the Scottish Regiments, with Statistics, to 1861". This account had been complied from old regimental record books and from the monthly returns rendered to the War Office by the regular Scottish Regiments. It contained data and figures of interest with regard to the composition of various regiments. All the information in the pages recorded above was originally published in 1862, and is reproduced here as it was written in that year. It must be read and viewed within the context of that period of history.
